Chicago Among the First of 20 Cities Tackling Energy Waste in Buildings

According to a recent NEMA Blog, “Buildings use 40 percent of the energy and about 80 percent of the electricity consumed in the United States, and much of that is wasted through the use of inefficient energy systems.” However,”Existing technologies such as lighting systems, energy-efficient motors, variable-frequency drives, integrated building controls, and automation systems can reduce building energy consumption by 50–70 percent or more.”
The City of Chicago was among the first 10 cities to join the City Energy Project (CEP) to help speed the adoption of these technologies to reduce energy waste in the coming years. More information on the CEP can be found on the City Energy Project website: www.cityenergyproject.org
Chicago’s plan includes reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 25% by the year 2020 (see Chicago Climate Action Plan for details), largely by connecting building and home owners to the tools and resources they need to retrofit their existing appliances, utilities, lighting and HVAC technology (visit Retrofit Chicago)
